Study Tips
Improve Your Study Habits
Students and Parents

  • Budget your time and stick to a schedule. Set aside the same time every night for homework. When that time arrives, drop what you're doing and get to work. A good rule of thumb is to allow a half hour study time for each academic subject. On weekends spend as much time as necessary to catch up or to prepare for the next week's work.
  • Take charge of your own education. At the end of each week take stock of your progress. Are you falling behind? If you are, add to your study time.
  • Have a regular place to study, preferably away from the family, and try to keep all your materials there and arranged neatly. Be sure you have the proper lighting.
  • Avoid distractions such as the radio, telephone, or television. Snack after you finish your work, not during study time.
  • Don't put things off. Do your work as soon as possible and allow time for each assignment.
  • Concentrate! When your mind begins to wander, it's time to stop for a few minutes for a relaxing stretch or breath of fresh air.
  • Study the hardest things first. Take advantage of the time when you are fresh and most alert.
  • Learn to use the dictionary and encyclopedia at every opportunity. They are two of your most valuable learning tools.
  • Learn to use the resources of the library. Its books and reference materials are your best sources of information for class assignments.
  • Use your free time at school to do homework. There are several resource centers where you can study. Find one you like and go there regularly.
  • Ask your counselor for help immediately if you have academic difficulties.
  • Learn to type and use a computer before you graduate.
